The USS Oriskany is not one dive. It is three distinctly different dive environments stacked vertically on the same aircraft carrier:
- Recreational divers explore the upper island beginning around 84 feet.
- Technical open-circuit divers can plan dives to the lower island, flight deck, hangar level and exterior hull.
- CCR and rebreather divers can extend range and runtime, but must solve unit-specific, bailout and decompression problems.
The top of the wreck begins around 84 feet. The flight deck lies approximately 145–150 feet deep. The hangar level is around 175 feet, and the sand surrounding the hull is approximately 212 feet deep. The wreck is about 22.5 nautical miles southeast of Pensacola Pass. (FWC) The boat ride out is 70 to 90 minutes.
Current official warning: Florida FWC recommends that divers not enter the ship under any circumstances because the extent of structural damage may be unknown. This guide therefore treats the Oriskany as an exterior wreck dive. Old photographs and videos showing penetration are historical records—not current confirmation that an opening is safe. (FWC)

Choose your version of the Oriskany
Recreational upper-island dive
For Advanced Open Water, Deep Diver and similarly qualified recreational divers remaining inside their training, gas and no-decompression limits.
Typical area: 84–130 feet
Primary attraction: Upper island, bridges, platforms and marine life
Direct ascent: Required
Planned decompression: No
Technical open-circuit dive
For trained decompression, trimix or advanced trimix teams using redundant equipment and a written dive plan.
Typical area: Approximately 131–212 feet
Primary attraction: Lower island, flight deck, exterior hangar level, hull and lower exterior structures
Direct ascent: Not necessarily available
Planned decompression: Common
CCR or rebreather dive
For unit-specific rebreather divers trained for the planned depth, gas and decompression obligation.
Typical area: Determined by certification, unit, diluent, bailout and team plan
Primary advantage: Gas efficiency and optimized breathing gas
Primary limitation: Bailout must still support the complete emergency ascent and decompression schedule
USS Oriskany depth map
Depths are approximate. The ship has a slight list, and storm activity, scouring, settlement and corrosion can change measurements and structures over time. Confirm current conditions with the captain and verify depth during the dive. Though, I have personally confirmed everything down to the flag bridge as of august 2026.

The names used for individual bridge levels vary among official diagrams, charter operators and divers. Plan around an agreed maximum depth—not merely a feature name.
Recreational diving the USS Oriskany
The recreational Oriskany is an upper-island dive.
It is not a recreational flight-deck dive.
The island begins around 84 feet and is large enough to occupy multiple dives. Recreational divers commonly report that the tower alone feels larger than many complete shipwrecks. They also report that the open water beneath the island can make it easy to descend deeper than intended, particularly when visibility is excellent. (Reddit) I dove on it with 150-foot visibility, and the sheer size of the flight deck creates the illusion that you are right next to it when you're are quit far from it.
Advanced certification does not always mean advanced experience
An Advanced Open Water card is a training credential. It is not an experience metric.
PADI permits a diver to begin Advanced Open Water immediately after completing Open Water. No additional post-certification dives are required before beginning the course. PADI Advanced Open Water training qualifies a diver to 100 feet; the Deep Diver specialty extends that training to the recreational limit of 130 feet. (PADI Blog)
That means a diver can arrive in Pensacola with:
- An Advanced Open Water card
- Approximately 15–20 total dives
- Only one training dive below 60 feet
- No previous offshore wreck experience
- No experience descending through open blue water
- No previous current-line or thermocline experience
That diver is not automatically incapable of diving the Oriskany. But the dive should be planned very differently from the dive of someone with 100 recent ocean dives.
The 15–20 dive reality check
The shallowest point of the wreck is around 84 feet. A PADI Advanced Open Water diver trained to 100 feet therefore has only approximately 16 feet of vertical wreck available within that certification limit.
That is enough to experience the Oriskany—but only if the diver accepts that the objective is the uppermost island, not a descent toward the lower bridges.
Book the recreational dive as planned when you can:
- Descend without becoming negatively buoyant or uncontrolled.
- Stop your descent at any chosen depth.
- Maintain depth without holding the wreck or line.
- Hold a stable safety stop in open water.
- Monitor gas, depth and no-decompression time simultaneously.
- Remain with a buddy during current and limited visibility.
- Abandon a visible target that lies beneath your planned depth.
- Use your equipment without searching for controls.
- Complete the dive without becoming dependent on your camera.
Book an in-water guide when:
- You have approximately 15–30 total dives.
- This is your first offshore deep wreck.
- You have not recently dived below 80 feet.
- You have limited experience with nitrox.
- You have never descended or ascended on a line in current.
- You are unfamiliar with Gulf thermoclines or open-blue-water descents.
A guide can reduce navigation and workload. A guide does not extend your certification depth, MOD, gas reserve or no-decompression limit. Dive guides on this boat cannot baby sit you. Be sure to ask for a dive guide to be with you if you need one. While dive guides will be there with the charter, you must communicate with them if you need assistance.
Postpone the Oriskany when:
- You cannot maintain a safety stop without holding something.
- You regularly descend deeper than intended.
- Your most recent dive was months or years ago.
- You plan to use completely unfamiliar rental equipment.
- You do not understand how to analyze nitrox or set your computer.
- You are planning to reach the flight deck recreationally.
- You believe 500 psi is the correct pressure for beginning ascent.
- You would be reluctant to end the dive after paying and traveling for it.
One local Pensacola source recommends Advanced or Deep Diver certification, at least 20 logged dives and two dives deeper than 80 feet during the previous year for an unguided Oriskany dive. Its guided recommendation still includes at least 20 logged dives and recent diving or a refresher. Individual charter policies vary. (Florida Dive Pros)
What recreational divers can see
A recreational dive can include:
- The upper tower
- Mast and radar-related structures
- Upper bridge areas within the team’s depth limit
- Exterior windows and openings
- Platforms and railings
- Large schools of fish
- Barracuda and amberjack
- Marine growth and smaller reef life
- Wide views of the island disappearing into the blue
The flight deck is not required to understand the scale of the ship. In many conditions, the deck will not be visible from the upper island at all.
In very clear water, it may appear close enough to reach. Your computer will give you a more accurate understanding of distance than your eyes.
Visibility is not permission.
A conservative recreational dive sequence
1. Agree on the hard limits before entering
Every teammate should know:
- Maximum depth
- Maximum bottom time
- Minimum remaining no-decompression time
- Turn pressure
- Minimum gas reserve
- Who leads
- Expected current direction
- Lost-buddy procedure
- Lost-line procedure
- Whether a guide is leading the team
- Whether the camera will be used during descent/ascent
Do not renegotiate the depth after seeing the wreck.
Your first time diving this ship should be conservative if you do not have significant dive time below 110 foot.
2. Descend as a team or with your buddy
Use the line specified during the captain’s briefing.
Pause if:
- Equalization becomes difficult.
- A diver begins falling below the team.
- Current requires heavy exertion.
- Buddy contact deteriorates.
- Equipment is not operating normally.
- The wreck cannot be located as expected.
- Someone is breathing much faster than planned.
There is no shallow bottom beneath a recreational diver who loses control.
I have personally rescued someone who was dropping beyond the 130 foot deep rec limit because they were panicking and couldn't figure out how to inflate the BCD. So be honest with yourself about your skill level. Accidents are never intentional.
3. Stabilize before beginning the tour
On reaching the upper island:
- Stop.
- Confirm depth.
- Confirm remaining gas.
- Confirm NDL.
- Confirm buddy condition.
- Observe the current.
- Begin the planned route only after the team is stable.
4. Conduct the deepest planned portion first
Begin at the deepest planned and qualified portion, then gradually move shallower.
FWC recommends locating the ascent line, swimming into the current first, conducting the deepest part first, ascending slowly and completing a five-minute stop near 15 feet. (FWC)
I personally choose which part of the ship I will dive and stick to that area the entire time. Bottom times are short. It's better to get a good view of one section than to try to see everything.
5. Turn at the first limit
The dive turns when the first of these occurs:
- Turn pressure
- Minimum reserve
- Maximum depth
- MOD
- Agreed bottom time
- Minimum remaining NDL
- Increasing current
- Thermal discomfort
- Buddy separation
- Equipment concern
- Loss of the planned ascent route
Do not wait for several limits to arrive simultaneously.
Nitrox for the USS Oriskany
Nitrox is recommended on the upper Oriskany, but the oxygen percentage must match the planned depth.
DAN identifies 1.4 ATA as a commonly used working oxygen partial-pressure limit. Every diver should personally analyze and mark the cylinder, calculate its MOD and program the actual measured oxygen percentage into the computer. (Divers Alert Network)

These values are mathematical limits—not recommended target depths.
Two different ceilings control the dive
Your training limit and your gas MOD are separate.
The shallower ceiling controls.
Examples:
- A PADI Advanced Open Water diver using EAN32 remains limited to 100 feet by training, even though the gas MOD is approximately 111 feet.
- A Deep Diver using EAN32 remains limited to approximately 111 feet by gas MOD, even though the training limit is 130 feet.
- EAN28 has a mathematical MOD near 132 feet, but that does not make the 134-foot flag bridge recreational.
Do not choose a lower-oxygen nitrox mixture simply to make a desired depth appear allowable. Oxygen MOD is only one part of the decision. Narcosis, gas density, workload, gas supply, decompression and training still apply.
Recreational gas management
Most local operator publishes two clear recreational rules: return with at least 500 psi and do not conduct decompression dives. That 500-psi requirement is a minimum pressure for returning to the boat.
There is no universal Oriskany turn pressure.
The correct reserve depends on:
- Cylinder type and working pressure
- Planned maximum depth
- Current
- Distance from the ascent line
- Individual breathing rates
- Team size
- Time needed to stabilize an emergency
- Time needed to ascend
- Required safety stops
- Whether one diver may need to supply another
A diver using an aluminum 80, HP100 or HP120 cannot use the same pressure number and assume each cylinder contains the same usable gas.
The practical rule is:
Preserve enough gas to manage a shared-gas problem from the deepest and most difficult point of the recreational dive.
That reserve must still exist when the team begins its normal ascent.
Conditions on the USS Oriskany
Visibility
Visibility can range from limited Gulf conditions to well over 100 feet.
Firsthand reports describe everything from approximately 20 feet of visibility to triple-digit visibility. Very clear water makes the wreck more visually impressive, but also removes the normal visual cues that tell a diver how deep they have descended. (Reddit)
I have been on it in 30 foot vis and 150 foot vis. Every dive has been fun but also very different. Sometimes the vis will be next to nothing for the first 50 feet of the descent, then it opens up to 60 plus foot visibility as the ship comes into focus.
Current
Current may be light, substantial or different at different depths.
A manageable surface current does not guarantee the same conditions at the island. Current can affect:
- Descent
- Gas consumption
- Team separation
- Ability to reach the wreck
- Return to the line
- Safety-stop control
- Surface separation
Do not judge conditions solely by what the water looks like beside the dock.
I have dove here with a strong current that pulled people 100 yards from the boat in a matter of minutes. But, the current has been slow or non existent for most of my dives here.
Temperature and thermoclines
Warm Pensacola surface water can conceal substantially colder water below the thermocline.
Some years, reports include approximately 68°F water near 115 feet during July and distinct temperature drops into the low-to-mid 70s on other summer dives. These are personal observations, not forecasts, but they show why exposure protection should be selected for the planned depth rather than the marina temperature. (Tripadvisor)
In 2026 - June through august, I was diving without a wetsuit in 80°F water temp at 130 foot. The surface was hitting 90°F
It is best to ask the dive operator what the current water temp is and what the recommended gear should be.
Weather cancellations
The Oriskany is a 22 miles offshore Gulf site. Wind, sea state, lightning and thunderstorms can cancel a trip after months of preparation.
A 2025 technical expedition report described a large CCR and open-circuit team completing extensive planning only to have the dive canceled because of weather at the wreck. Build an extra day into a destination trip whenever possible. (InDEPTH)
The end of summer here is hurricane season. Tropical storms can mess the water up for a month. Weather in the gulf is at best unpredictable. Storms can come and go in the same hour. Charter captains are constantly monitoring for changes. Plan accordingly and don't be suppressed if weather cancels or postpones the trip a few hours.
Seasickness
Seasickness is not merely uncomfortable. It can produce fatigue, dehydration, distraction and poor decision-making before the dive begins.
DAN notes that common motion-sickness medications may cause drowsiness or other side effects that can impair diving. Test any medication on land well before depending on it offshore. (Divers Alert Network)
Recreational Oriskany equipment
Charter requirements control, but a prepared recreational diver are recommended to carry:
- Personally analyzed breathing gas (most charters here have one of these for you)
- Dive computer configured for the actual gas
- Compass
- DSMB and spool
- Audible surface signal
- Cutting device
- Appropriately secured dive light
- Exposure protection for deep-water temperature
- Familiar buoyancy system and regulator
- Spare mask when appropriate
- Streamlined camera equipment
- Save-a-dive kit left aboard the boat
Do not debut a new regulator, BCD, computer, exposure suit or camera system on the Oriskany.
Camera recommendation
For a diver with limited deep-ocean experience, the first Oriskany dive should prioritize:
- Descent
- Buoyancy
- Depth
- Gas
- NDL
- Buddy position
- Ascent route
- Photography
A camera consumes attention. Treat it as an additional task—not as passive equipment.
For a first-time diver with approximately 15–20 dives, leaving a large camera on the boat for Dive One is often the correct decision.
Advanced underwater videographers and photographers - be honest with yourself about your skill levels if you bring your camera the first time.
Professional videographers: If the vis is excellent, look for wide shots from a distance! You won't have time to get more than two sides on one dive. You can get all four sides of the tower in two dives and get a few close-up shots as you start coming in and moving up the tower, but you won't have time to go into some of the openings. I would suggest two, two tank dives if you want to get a good amount of footage.
Technical open-circuit diving the USS Oriskany
The technical Oriskany begins where a diver crosses from a direct-ascent, no-decompression upper-island dive into planned decompression, greater depth, increased distance or a more complex equipment configuration.
The flight deck is not simply “another 15 feet” below the recreational limit. It represents a different operating environment.

A local technical charters like H20 Below requires divers to provide proof of certification appropriate to the planned target and uses Advanced Trimix certification for a proposed dive to the screws as an example. It also requires a written plan describing route, decompression schedule and total runtime.
Match the target to the certification
Training systems differ, but TDI provides a useful example of the progression:
- Decompression Procedures: staged decompression to a maximum of 150 feet
- Trimix Diver: helium-based diving to a maximum of 200 feet
- Advanced Trimix: hypoxic trimix diving to a maximum of 330 feet
Those course limits are examples—not universal permission. Actual qualification also depends on agency standards, instructor-imposed restrictions, post-certification experience, current proficiency and the similarity between the planned dive and previous dives. (International Training)
The 145–150-foot flight deck therefore sits at the outer boundary of common entry-level decompression training, not comfortably inside a recreational envelope.
The approximately 212-foot sand level is deeper than the 200-foot limit of some normoxic trimix courses.
Technical gas selection
A technical gas plan must address more than oxygen MOD.
It must also account for:
- Gas density
- Equivalent narcotic depth
- Work of breathing
- Carbon-dioxide retention
- Oxygen exposure
- Decompression
- Travel-gas requirements
- Gas-switch identification
- Lost-gas contingencies
- Gas availability in Pensacola
DAN discusses approximately 5.2 grams per liter as a desirable gas-density target and approximately 6.2 grams per liter as an upper limit. Its examples place air near 6.2 grams per liter around 128 feet and EAN32 above that level around 130 feet. That makes gas density relevant before reaching the Oriskany flight deck—not only at the sand. (Divers Alert Network)
Reducing oxygen percentage to extend MOD does not reduce nitrogen narcosis or gas density.
Helium selection should be based on the team’s training, target depth, gas-density limit, equivalent narcotic depth, decompression strategy and available fills—not on a generic “Oriskany mix” copied from another diver.

No one on the team should need the strongest diver to interpret the plan during an emergency.
Return-to-line planning
A technical diver may remain in open water while still developing a functional overhead.
That functional overhead consists of:
- Decompression obligation
- Distance from the ascent line
- Current between the diver and the line
- Insufficient gas for a free ascent away from the boat
- Surface conditions that make drifting decompression hazardous
A plan that works only if the DPV, current and tie-in all behave perfectly is not a complete plan.
DPV planning
A scooter can make a very large wreck more accessible. It also introduces another failure point.
The team must be able to manage:
- DPV failure at the furthest point
- Towing a failed unit
- Assisting a teammate
- Returning without scooter assistance
- Increased separation caused by speed
- Navigation mistakes made more quickly
- Stowing or managing the DPV during decompression
- Gas reserve for a slower-than-planned return
A DPV should shorten a route that remains survivable without it. It should not be the component that makes an otherwise insufficient gas plan appear viable.
Technical penetration warning
FWC’s present public guidance recommends no entry into the ship because structural damage may be unknown. The wreck has also continued to experience storm effects, settlement, scouring and corrosion. (FWC)
For that reason:
- This guide does not publish penetration routes.
- Old room names do not establish present accessibility.
- Old line routes do not establish structural stability.
- Visible daylight does not eliminate the physical overhead.
- Certification does not establish that a particular route is currently intact.
- Historical technical videos should be treated as visual documentation of a previous condition.
CCR and rebreather diving the USS Oriskany

CCR diving deserves its own section because it creates a different planning problem from open-circuit technical diving.
A rebreather can improve gas efficiency and breathing-gas optimization. It does not remove:
- Depth
- Current
- Decompression
- Narcosis
- Gas-density considerations
- Carbon-dioxide risk
- Oxygen-control risk
- Structural change
- Team separation
- Weather
- The need to bail out
CCR changes endurance. It does not simplify the environment.
Match the wreck zone to the CCR qualification

These limits are agency-specific and unit-specific. Manufacturer limitations, diluent choice, bailout, environmental experience and the actual conditions of training still control. (International Training)
This creates several important boundaries:
- Air-diluent CCR decompression training may cover portions of the island but not the flight deck.
- A 150-foot helitrox qualification may reach the flight-deck depth but not the hangar level.
- A 200-foot mixed-gas CCR qualification may not cover the 212-foot sand.
- Reaching the lower exterior wreck may require advanced mixed-gas qualification, depending on actual depth and agency standards.
Unit-specific experience matters
A CCR card is not universally transferable across units.
Mixed-gas CCR training commonly requires substantial logged time on the specific rebreather. TDI’s current Mixed Gas CCR course, for example, requires a verified minimum of 50 rebreather hours distributed across at least 50 dives, with a defined portion required on the actual unit. The Oriskany should not be:
- A first dive on a recently purchased unit
- A first dive after major configuration changes
- A first dive after a long period of inactivity
- A first dive with unfamiliar bailout mounting
- A first dive with a new controller or handset
- A first dive with an unfamiliar drysuit or heating system
CCR bailout planning
Bailout must work from the worst credible failure point—not from the average portion of the dive.
That generally means evaluating the deepest, furthest and most decompression-expensive point of the planned route.
The bailout plan must account for:
- Immediate transition to open circuit
- Stress-elevated breathing
- Time needed to diagnose and stabilize
- Return to the ascent route
- Current
- Ascent
- All required decompression
- Lost bailout cylinder
- Lost decompression gas
- Team separation
- Whether gas sharing is part of the plan
- Whether every diver can surface independently
TDI’s bailout guidance emphasizes carrying or arranging enough open-circuit gas to complete the ascent without compromising conservative decompression. (International Training)
A team-bailout strategy is not permission for an individual diver to surface independently with insufficient gas.
CCR pre-dive checklist
Before leaving the dock, confirm:
- Unit-specific certification for the planned depth
- Recent experience on the specific unit
- Manufacturer-compliant assembly
- Completed positive and negative tests
- Scrubber packed and documented
- Scrubber duration suitable for anticipated workload and temperature
- Oxygen analyzed
- Diluent analyzed
- Bailout cylinders analyzed and marked
- Cell behavior verified
- Controller and HUD function verified
- Batteries checked
- Loop hoses and mouthpiece inspected
- Off-board connections checked
- Bailout regulators tested
- DSMB and spool accessible
- Team bailout plan understood
- Total charter runtime accepted by the captain
A local Oriskany operator specifically asks rebreather divers to explain their individual rigs to the captain or divemaster before the dive. (Niuhi Dive Charters)
CCR boat logistics
Confirm these details before paying for the trip:
- Can the boat securely hold the unit upright?
- Is there room for all bailout and decompression cylinders?
- How are stages secured during transit?
- Can the diver enter fully equipped?
- Can cylinders be passed down after entry?
- How will the diver climb the ladder?
- Can the unit be removed in the water if necessary?
- Are oxygen and boosted fills available locally?
- Is the boat’s maximum permitted runtime compatible with the plan?
- Does the crew understand the team’s DSMBs and expected surfacing window?
- Are DPVs accepted and safely stowed?
CCR photography
Rebreathers are well suited to underwater photography because of reduced bubbles and potentially longer runtime. That advantage creates a predictable trap: the photographer begins treating life-support monitoring as an interruption.
The priority remains:
- Loop
- PO₂
- Cells
- Depth
- Time
- Team
- Bailout
- Ascent route
- Camera
A photograph is never the next task when the unit has produced unexplained information.
A documented CCR lesson from the Oriskany
A recently published U.S. Coast Guard investigation examined a fatal 2020 CCR dive at the Oriskany.
The report documented a dive to approximately 184 feet, followed by multiple rapid depth changes. Its investigation concluded that failure to complete computer-recommended decompression stops was a causal factor. The autopsy identified arterial gas embolism due to rapid ascent. A later Coast Guard endorsement stated that equipment failure and nitrogen narcosis could not be ruled out because key evidence was unavailable. (United States Coast Guard)
This report does not establish a problem with present-day charter operations. It establishes a direct site-specific lesson:
Deep experience, advanced certification and sophisticated equipment do not protect a diver from an uncontrolled ascent, an unstable profile or an incomplete decompression response.
The report should be read in full by serious CCR teams planning deeper Oriskany dives.

What Oriskany divers consistently report
Firsthand reports vary considerably, but several themes recur.
The island is enough for multiple dives

Your Oriskany preparation checklist
Before booking
- Identify whether the trip is recreational, technical open circuit or CCR.
- Confirm the operator accepts your certification and configuration.
- Decide whether you need an in-water guide.
- Confirm available cylinder sizes and gases.
- Confirm maximum runtime.
- Build at least one weather-buffer day into destination travel.
- Avoid booking a departing flight too soon after diving.
One to two weeks before the dive
- Make a local checkout dive in the same equipment.
- Practice controlled descents and stops.
- Deploy a DSMB.
- Verify computer settings and battery condition.
- Service known equipment problems.
- Confirm exposure protection.
- Test any motion-sickness medication on land.
- Review gas and depth limits with your buddy.
The day before
- Analyze all available cylinders.
- Mark gases and MODs.
- Charge cameras, computers and lights.

- 12 hours after one no-decompression dive
- 18 hours after multiple dives in one day or multiple days of diving
- Substantially longer than 18 hours after compulsory decompression or helium-based diving

Frequently asked questions
Is Advanced Open Water enough for the USS Oriskany?
It can be enough for a carefully controlled dive on the uppermost island when the charter accepts the diver and the diver has suitable recent experience.
For PADI divers, Advanced Open Water training carries a maximum depth of 100 feet. That does not cover the deeper bridge levels, flag bridge or flight deck. (PADI Blog)
Can someone dive the Oriskany with only 20 dives?
Possibly, but certification alone should not make the decision.
A diver with 20 dives should strongly consider an in-water guide, remain near the top of the island, use familiar equipment and avoid adding a large camera system. A diver who cannot maintain depth and safety stops independently should postpone.
Can recreational divers reach the flight deck?
No, the flight deck lies approximately 145–150 feet deep, beyond the normal 130-foot recreational limit. It should be approached as a properly trained technical decompression dive. (FWC)
What is the best nitrox mix for the Oriskany?
There is no single best mix.
The correct gas depends on maximum depth, actual cylinder analysis, training limit, PO₂ policy, NDL strategy and the dive plan. EAN32 has an approximate MOD of 111 feet at a PO₂ of 1.4, so it does not cover the navigation bridge near 124 feet.
Is the Oriskany suitable for a first deep dive?
It is a poor place to discover that you struggle with deep-water buoyancy, current, narcosis, rapid gas use or open-water safety stops.
Complete shallower deep dives in comparable equipment first.
Pensacola has many dives between 80 and 100 foot that are fantastic deep dives for gaining experience.
Is a guide required?
Requirements vary by operator and diver experience. Even when not required, a guide can be valuable for a low-dive-count AOW diver, a first-time visitor or a photographer carrying significant equipment. Guides here are not like guides at Caribbean destinations. They are not holding your hands and keeping you round up like cattle. You are responsible for yourself so ensure you take care of yourself. If you need a personal guide ask for one. They are always available.
Can divers enter the Oriskany?
Florida FWC currently recommends no entry under any circumstances because the extent of structural damage may be unknown. (FWC) It happens but its not recommended. There are wires and many items that can be entangled on in the lower levels of the Oriskany and storm damage has made some of it even more risky. It is best to avoid it.
Is a rebreather necessary?
No. Recreational divers can have an excellent dive on the upper island using conventional open-circuit equipment.
CCR becomes relevant when qualified divers want increased range, longer runtime or optimized breathing gas for deeper technical profiles.
How many dives are needed to see the Oriskany?
Two dives provide an introduction. They do not cover the complete wreck.
The upper island alone can occupy several dives, and the technical exterior presents many additional objectives. (Reddit)
What marine life is commonly seen?

There is no guaranteed best month.
Visibility, current, deep-water temperature, wind, thunderstorms and sea state vary. A favorable marine forecast and a flexible travel schedule matter more than selecting a supposedly perfect month.

About the USS Oriskany
USS Oriskany was an Essex-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1950. She served during the Korean and Vietnam wars before being decommissioned. The ship was intentionally sunk off Pensacola on May 17, 2006, becoming a major artificial reef and memorial to those who served aboard her.
The wreck should be treated as both a world-class dive site and a military memorial.
